Huichol Art Muwieri

They are considered symbols of spiritual authority and are imbued with cultural and religious significance for the community.

Muwieri canes are made of wood, usually from a specific type of tree called "kiera", from which they derive their name. These canes are decorated with intricate designs using chaquiras (glass beads) and other materials such as wool, colored threads, feathers and shells. The designs on the muwieri canes usually represent symbols and figures important in the Huichol cosmovision, such as deities, sacred animals, elements of nature and abstract representations of spiritual aspects.

Muwieri staffs are used by spiritual leaders and shamans in various ritual ceremonies, such as pilgrimages to sacred sites, healing rituals, ceremonies of thanksgiving to the gods and community festivities. These objects are considered spiritual guardians and energy channelers during Huichol ceremonial practices.
